  • 1/4 cup water (or just enough to grind the above to a paste)

For Seasoning

  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 Red Chilies (dried)
  • Curry leaves
  • 3 Small onions (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Shredded

Instructions

Making Coconut paste

  • To a blender put all the ingredients under the Coconut paste section: Shredded coconut, garlic, small onions, green chilies, cumin seeds, and water just enough to grind this into a paste.
  • Grind it into a smooth and fine paste-like form

Cooking Cherupayar

  • Into a pressure cooker put the washed cherupayar, green chilies, curry leaves, turmeric powder, salt and water
  • Close the cooker and cook it for 4-5 whistles on medium flame
  • After the whistles, switch off the stove, do not open the cooker until the steam has left the cooker by itself
  • After opening the cooker, give the green grams a good stir, it would be well cooked (if not, close the cooker and cook for 2 more whistles)
  • Again back on the stove on medium flame, place the cooker with cooked green grams, pour the coconut paste and 1 cup of water
  • Mix well and let it boil
  • Once boiled, move to another bowl

Seasoning

  • On the stove with medium flame, place a pan
  • Pour 1tbsp of Coconut oil and then when the oil gets hot add the mustard seeds , dried red chilies and curry leaves
  • Put the small onions (chopped), stir until well sauteed
  • Then add the shredded coconut
  • Stir it until the coconut turns brown color
  • Once brown, then take the pan off the stove
  • And drop the seasonings to the curry made
  • And stir well
  • Yummy Cherupayar Curry is Ready

Notes

The curry would thicken after sometime, so you would need to add the water according to the consistency you need.
Very easy, tasty and healthy recipe it is. Have it with hot steaming rice and 1tsp of ghee on top of it. That’s how my mom used to give me when I was a child and now I do that to my girls. 😊😊 And they just love the cherupayar curry and ghee combination
Hope you also would love it.
Lots of Love,
